On the opposite side of the Yangon river from Myanmar’s financial center, groups of shipbreakers in the Yangon township of Dala work to break down old ships for salvage. Wood is re-used in housing and furniture, while metal nails and rivets are melted down and recycled. Most of these men are migrant workers form the Ayeyarwaddy delta, many are illiterate, and the pay is low. They work long hours in a very dangerous environment with little or no access to medical care when frequent accidents occur.
